Lap 4 of an 8-lap heat race turned into the most harrowing moment of Griffith's career. Griffith was hit in an awkward spot entering the corner, causing his car to spin. A second hit launched him into a violent barrel roll through the turn, causing his car to flip three times and to land upside down. This was not only the worst crash of his career but the most severe accident of the entire Cook Out Summer Shoutout. TV coverage was cut immediately, as concern for his condition increased. Track officials carefully rolled the car upright with Griffith still inside. With relief, Griffith emerged unscathed from the wreck.

After a trip to the infield care center, Griffith was evaluated and released. Having no time for rest, returning to the garage stall, he immediately got straight to work, cutting away the damage and replacing what he could in order to get the car loaded back into the trailer. While looking at the destroyed car, Griffith was disheartened but not discouraged. This crash didn't end Griffith's career, but it was only the beginning.
